Chapter IX of the Alabama Counseling Association Welcomes you!

Newsletter August 2009

The Valkyrie’s View

by Karena Valkyrie, president, ALCA Chapter IX

We are in full preparation for our Fall 2009 workshop on September 11 in Dothan, AL at the Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center.  Dr. Chan Roark, Associate Professor at Troy University, an international researcher and presenter on the Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), will lead a two hour workshop entitled:  Unlocking the Potential of the Underachiever: Using the Magic of Type to Open the Doors of Lifelong Learning.  Dr. Roark is an engaging speaker who will look at the main typologies as a diagnostic and intervention tool for individuals who are working with the underachieving individual.  We believe this workshop information will be invaluable for the mental health counselor, the school counselor, the classroom teacher or faculty. We encourage to you spread the word! We are applying for Counseling and Rehabilitation Counselor Ceus.

Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center is located at 795 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan AL 36303.  The workshop walk-in registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the two hour workshop will start at 9:00 a.m. Following Dr. Roark’s presentation we will have lunch and the ALCA IX fall business meeting.   We need your participation in the workshop and at the business meeting – Chapter IX has great goals for service to our region, but we dearly need volunteers to help us meet those goals.

Knowing the economic strain many of us are feeling we have tried to make sure the registration fees are reasonable ($25 for ALCA members, $30 for Non-members and $15 for student members with documentation)  All participants registered by September 8 will receive lunch during the business meeting for no extra cost.  Registration forms will be mailed to members and made available on the website in August. For information or to register, please contact Margaret Fox at P. O. Box 515, Brantley AL  36009. Email address is: mfox@oppboe.com. One of the door-prizes will be paid-registration to the ALCA annual conference in Birmingham (November 18-20).

ALCA IX is exploring a Preparation for Comps Workshop for counseling students in a masters program.  If you are interested in participating in a one-half day workshop (either free or a nominal fee to cover copy costs) to help you develop a study strategy for comps preparation – or if you simply want more information, please contact. Dr. Karena T. Valkyrie at 334-670-3359 or kvalkyrie@troy.edu .

Finally, we are excited to announce that we are working with Chapter VII and the Multi-Culture and Aging Divisions to create a workshop entitled: “Day of Diversity: The Ethics of Cultural Competency.”  This Building Bridges Workshop experience will take place in March of 2010. Plans are shaping up and all will be kept informed.  We expect the workshop will be held at Auburn – Montgomery in early march.  We are looking for presenters from our chapters.  If you have a recommendation, please email: kvalkyrie@troy.edu. Look for workshop updates on our website - http://alcachapterix.com/index.html..

We want to keep our chapter growing, and new ideas flowing.  Do something today by asking a peer or coworker if they are a member of ALCA.  If they are not already a member, invite them to join.

· Nominate someone for an award.  Contact me, Carol Dean, Lisa Patterson, Anita Neuer, or Gary Williams.

Submit information for our newsletter and ALCA’s.  Both always need information and it keeps other members informed.  Information can be on something you or someone else has done, a great program you attended, or any other news item.  It could be about something you or your employer has been a part of.  Let’s let the rest of our state know what's going on in the counties of Chapter IX.
